Monday morning :“ I just need to field seven players to take India out. They are a very easy team now. I am confident of wining”-FAJER EBRAHIM Syrian coach.
Monday night 9:30: India win the ONGC Nehru Cup.
I have never been a person who follows soccer, but this quote in the Hindustan Times really put me off .
You don’t need to follow soccer to know the state Indian is in, but that’s not because the sport doesn’t have any following in the country, it’s just that the Indian Govt. has never been to good at promoting any sport(look at hockey, athletics) and all the corporate sector is too busy running after the cricketers. Being an Indian its already tough enough for the kid to follow his dream sport as a career( A TYPICAL INDIAN PARENT:“ padh le baith ke, ye khlne kudne se kuch nahin hone wala, is bar 90% nai aye to....”). Even if the parents are ok with sports they do prefer their kid to be a cricketer( oye puttar footbal chor, khelna hai te kirkit khel… “) because that’s where the money is.
In spite of very little money, very little support these guys in the Indian team had the guts to follow their dream sport. In spite of all odds stacked being against them( Syria is 61 ranks ahead of India) they managed to win. I salute them for their spirit.
P.S: i cant wait to read Mr Ebrahim's interview in tomorrows news paper!!
